Beijing-Lhasa Train FAQ

Can I buy Beijing to Lhasa train ticket by myself at train station?
No, you cannot buy the train ticket from Beijing to Lhasa unless you have had obtained the Tibet permit beforehand; because when you buy the tickets, the lady at the ticking office will ask you to show the Tibet permit to her, otherwise you cannot get the train tickets. Besides the Tibet permit, you have to show your passport too; the train ticket just likes air ticket including information like your name, passport number, so you have to take good care of it.
From which train station does the Beijing-Lhasa train depart? What is the best way to reach there?
The Beijing-Lhasa train departs at Beijing West Train Station which is 36.2 kilometers away from Beijing Capital International airport, it takes about one hour by taxi depends on traffic. So far, there has been no direct metro leading to the Beijing West Train Station, and the nearest metro station is the Military Museum station( 军事博物馆站) by taking metro line one. And from Military Museum, you can reach the Beijing West Train Station by walk within 30 minutes, or you can take bus number 21, 65, 99 and 320. Please make sure arrive at the train station at least 1 hour before the train departure time, because the security check and boarding almost take 20 minutes. 
Can I take bath on the train?
No, there is no bath room on the train; you'd better take a bath before getting on board because it will be a 44 hours journey, and also you are not advised to take shower either after your arrival in Lhasa as showering makes you catching cold easier, which is the biggest threat to trigger altitude sickness. However, if you feel everything is alright and quite fit, you can take shower on the second day after your arrival, but do make sure do not catch cold during or after shower.
Are there electronic outlets which I can use to charge my camera or mobile phone?
Yes, there are electronic outlets available on both hard-sleeper and soft-sleeper train car, and you can use them to charge your camera, phone, computer and etc., but sometimes you have to share those outlets with others as the number limited, not per one for per person.
Is there hot water on the train? 
Yes, hot water is available at each train car; there is a water heater located at each end of each train car. So, you can make a cup of tea or coffee on board too. People use it quite often to have instant noodles.
How is the washing room or toilet like on the train?
There is no private washroom or toilet for each cabin, yet there is a sink area at each end of a train car. Just opposite of the sink area is the toilet, you can go to other train cars to use the toilet if the one on yours is occupied. The toilet has no toilet bowl, but it is quite clean, and the attendant will clean it every day.
Can I use my mobile phone while on the train?
Throughout this 44 hours train ride, only 10 hours ride stays in zero signal zones at most, so most of time, you can call your friend, signal is even accessible when train runs over 5000 meter high.
Is internet accessible on the train? 
There is no network terminal or plug on the train, but it is still possible to get on internet if you got 3G computer or mobile phone as there is 3G signal whenever there is mobile signal. But it is really unstable sometimes, so suggest you finish your internet work before train ride.
Where can I have meals and how is a meal like on the train?
There is one dining car; everybody can go there to have breakfast, lunch and dinners. Food there are rich, from drinks to snacks to main dishes, and for trains between Beijing and Lhasa, Beijing and Tibetan cuisine is mainly served. Many meat and vegetables are available, also the vegetarian food is provided. The price of food there is little bit expensive, but dining car is really a good place for you to view sceneries as the windows there are really big.
