Located 6 km to the southwest of the city proper of Jiayuguan, it was first built in 1372 in the Ming Dynasty.The pass is famous for its strategically important terrain that is almost inaccessible and lofty and magnificent architecture. It is the best preserved and most magnificent and precipitous one among some 1,000 passes along the Great Wall. As part of the Great Wall, Jiayuguan Pass was incorporated into the World Cultural Heritage List in 1987.

Jiayuguan Pass has a magnificent layout and imposing momentum. Its inner city, covering 25,000 square meters, is the major part of the existing pass and has walls of 10.7 meters tall and 640 meters in girth that were rammed with loess. The walls on the west side, built with bricks, are solid and majestic. On the walls of inner city there are altogether 14 embrasured watchtowers, lookout towers, corner towers, garrets and sluice gates. Inside the pass there exist site such as Mansion of Youji General, Wenchang Pavilion, Temple of Guanyu, decorative archway and theater.
