Tibetan painter Nyima Tsering said Tibetan people have the right to live a modern life and enjoy the fruits of modernization so as to keep up with the world trends.

He made the above remark during his cultural exchange tour in Australia which was concluded on June 6.

The modernization in Tibet and other Tibetan-inhabited areas in China have always given risen to much controversy in some western countries, and even been distorted by the Dalai clique as "cultural genocide", criticizing it might destroy Tibetan culture and change their way of life.

"Those who have a prejudice against Tibet's modernization should be clear that Tibetans share one common need with anyone in the world--that is to live a better life," Nyima Tsering added.

Anyone who is familiar with Nyima Tsering knows he is used to wearing a bowler hat wherever he goes.

"Tibetan people like wearing hat to prevent sunburn, so somebody said the the hat may keep my Tibetan identity. But in my opinion, tradition is a spiritual concept rather than a kind of symbol or something," said Nyima Tsering, China's first-class painter.

He explained that the best way to protect and carry forward the traditional culture is to move with the times and never be confined by the old concept.

"Whoever tries to keep Tibetans in an isolated and unenlightened place and turns Tibet into a 'living fossil' is selfish. They should be more objective on Tibet's modernization," added Nyima Tsering, also painter of the deceased 10th Panchen Lama.

He pointed out that no county or nationality in the world could be an exception in the course of globalization and modernization. The vitality of Tibetan culture should rely on its development instead of sticking in the past.
