Amdo is most famous for its religion and livestock. 2 of the 6 most important Gelupa sect (yellow hat) monasteries are in this area while the other 4 are near Lhasa. And the best grass on the roof of the world is in this area, so the yaks, horses and sheep here are of the best quality too. Through this tour, we will show you the best pictures of religion and nomadic life of Amdo.

Day 1 Flight or train to Lanzhou, pick-up and transfer to Xiahe.  250 km

Highlights: Visit Bingling Grotto

Schedule: Todays' drive takes 5 hours including a stop in Linxia city which is known as China's Mekka for its deep and strong Muslim culture; one detour to Bingling Grotto, 1 of 10 grottos in China is arranged; to arrive the grotto, we have to take a short distance cruise on the plateau lake that surrounded by the mountains. The detour costs 3 hours. After arrival in the beautiful Xiahe town that surrounded by green mountains, you are on your own.

Day 2 Full day visit of Labrang Monastery.

Highlights: Labrang Monastery

Schedule: This is the largest Tibetan monastery outside of Tibet Autonomous Region. It houses more than 1000 monks of the Gelug sect (Yellow Hat) of Tibet Buddhism, at this monastery there are 6 schools of Buddhist teachings. In the morning, an English speaking monk guide from the monastery will show you around some main chapels of this monastery. In the afternoon, our guide will take you to see the printing temple where the sutras are still printed by using wooden blocks. Also, if you feel fine, we can do the big kora around the monastery, which involves lots of walking.

Day 3 Xiahe-Tongren.  110 km

Highlights: Visit Nomadic families, Rongwo Monastery, upper Wutun Village & Monastery

Schedule: We leave Xiahe for Tongren, in Tibetan, called Regong which means a warm valley. After arrival in Tongren we visit the Rongwo Monastery. This colorful yellow sect monastery was built in 1301 and has 4 monastery schools. The buildings are built in Tibetan and han Chinese style. In the middle of the temple complex is the Grand Hall, which hosts, among others, 10 Sakyamuni Buddha's. After the monastery visit, we go to upper Wutun Village where the very famous Regong Thangka Painters living, we can visit their house and see how they paint famous Tibetan Thangka alive. Just besides the village is the upper Wutun Monastery, we can see the 30 meter high Guomari pagoda, the highest pagoda in Qinghai province. It has five floors and the walls of the pagoda are carved with Buddha's.

Day 4 Tongren-Xining.  190 km

Highlights: Taer Monastery

Schedule: Taer Monastery is one of the 6 main yellow hat sect monasteries, the Labrang monastery in Xiahe also being one. Kumbum was built in 1560 and since this is the birth place of Tsongkhapa, the founder of yellow sect Buddhism, it has become a very holy place. Many pilgrims come from all over China, Tibet and Mongolia to pray here. Among the most famous halls are: the Great hall (birth place of Tsongkhapa), the hall of Butter Sculptures, the great Meditation hall and the 13 meter high Stupa.
